IGNOU was established in 1985 by an Act of Indian Parliament to democratize higher education. The University provides cost-effective quality education to large sections of Indian population. It adopts a learner-centric approach with a policy of openness and flexibility in terms of entry qualifications, duration, pace and place of learning for successful completion of the programmes.
IGNOU presently offers 228 Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Doctoral programmes with a strength of nearly 810 faculty members, 574 Academic staff at the headquarters and Regional Centres and about 33212 academic counsellors. IGNOU has established a strong network of 67 Regional Centres and about 2667 learner support centres. IGNOU has 29 overseas partner institutions. Presently University serves the educational aspirations of over 3 million students in India and abroad through 21 Schools of Study.
