Saurav Sarmah has been an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab since 2017. He has done his postgraduate research and education at School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He received the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Merit Award (2008-09) for securing first position in the M.A. exam, UGC NET-JRF in International and Area Studies and UGC NET in Political Science. He has been mentored in Sinology by Prof. Srikanth Kondapalli. He was a part of the Indian think tank delegation to China, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of People's Republic of China in 2015. He wrote a report on his findings in China. He has participated in various conferences organised by the Forum for Integrated National Security (FINS), Mumbai. His prominent works have been on China's soft power strategy and China's civilisational perspective. He has collaborated with young Chinese scholars like Dr. Xie Chao and Dr. Zhang Yang on better understanding of India-China relations. He also mentors India-China Study Circle, a think tank of students.

He has taught the following papers for the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) course at RGNUL: Political Theory, Western Political Thought, Non-Western Political Thought, Comparative Public Administration, India’s Foreign Policy and International Relations. He is a member of the Centre for Constitutional Law and Governance (CCLG). He has served in various committees, like the Admission Committee, Internal Quality and Assessment Cell (IQAC), Literary and Debate Committee, Sports Committee, Cultural Committee, etc. He has also organised different seminars, panel discussions and workshops. He was a part of the teams that organised TEDxRGNUL 3.0 and 4.0. He has attended a series of courses on Political and Legal Philosophy by Prof. Robert Shapiro, International Workshop on Academic Writing and Faculty Development Programme on Blended Learning Courses with MOODLE LMS by Prof. K. Srinivas.

He has written articles, presented papers and made videos on international relations, national security, social and philosophical issues. He has worked with several organisations, like Think India, FINS, SPICMACAY, Bhaktivedanta Academy for Culture and Education (BACE), Samprajna Institute and Dhimahi Institute for Education and Learning (DIEL). He is proficient in four languages: English, Hindi, Assamese and Nepali and does a lot of his research on Chinese and Sanskrit sources.
